Hyperparasitism, parasitism of one parasite by another, has become increasingly popular for biological control of plant pathogens. However, there are many important aspects of successful control that have not been adequately studied. Here, we present data for the use of three different hyperparasitic fungi for biocontrol purposes. Eudarluca caricis isolates, parasites of rust fungi, contrast with the general assumption that hyperparasites are host-specific. The phylogenetic analysis to determine the relationship of Eudarluca caricis with other hyperparasitic fungi revealed that Eudarluca and the powdery mildew parasite Ampelomyces share a common ancestor.

The study of Ampelomyces on bigleaf maple powdery mildew revealed that the hyperparasite is present as an endophyte in seed and other non-mildewed plant tissues. This is the first time that a hyperparasite has been reported as an endophyte in a potential mutualistic relationship with the plant.

Colletotrichum gloeosporioides has been studied on several dwarf mistletoes as a potential control agent. We cannot draw conclusions on its ability to control Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium douglasii) from our inoculation studies because Colletotrichum was not re-isolated: In contrast, in several sites Colletotrichum was found as an endophyte in healthy green shoots of Douglas-fir dwarf mistletoe.
