Thesis (D.Min.)--Hartford Seminary, 2001.
This Doctor of Ministry project report addresses the need for ongoing ministries for nonmembers who have come to Southwick Congregational Church for religious services and pastoral care during significant times of transition in their lives, specifically in connection with baptisms, weddings and funerals. Each year, several nonmember individuals, families or couples are ministered to in these ways by the ordained clergy, and though some attempt has always been made to continue that relationship, the people are rarely seen again. In response to this perceived need three lay ministry teams have been commissioned, and programs have been planned and organized that offer follow-up support, education and nurture.

This report describes these specialized ministry programs, the process by which they were developed, and the setting that inspired them. It discusses the theological foundations on which they were built, including theologies of community, the ministry of the laity, and Christian rites of baptism, marriage and funerals. It evaluates the change elicited by the project and considers its implications for future ministries in this and other settings.

The programs developed by the three lay ministry teams are as follows: (1) Grief Encounters: a sharing and supportive group with monthly meetings at a community setting; (2) Early Marriage Enrichment: a social and educational group with monthly gatherings at the church or in home settings; (3) Baptismal Reunions: a celebrative, informative, and social event that gathers annually in the church fellowship hall.

At the outset, the parameters of the project were intentionally undefined so that the teams could employ their own ideas and gifts in the planning process. The teams were simply asked to initiate their work with theological reflection, and to plan programs that would offer caring outreach without be used as a means of promoting church growth. The programs focused, instead, on expanding the concept of Christian community rather than increasing the size of the congregation, and positive change rather than numbers became the means of measuring success.
