In this paper, the author discusses different types of effects that the Data Encryption Standard (DES) has on voice communication inside of a VoIP infrastructure. By adding DES encryption to a network, it generates latency into the network. In addition, DES encryption increases the size of the voice packets. As a result, DES encryption introduces extra bandwidth. Voice communication inside of VoIP should only be used if delay is less than or equal to 150 ms, otherwise a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) should be used.
