Thesis (M.P.A.S.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
This thesis explores, in two parts, the history of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), and its relationship to the Los Angeles, especially in regards to its beginnings as a public artwork. The first part is a theoretical discussion of urban space, identity, and representation relating to writing about Los Angeles and in response to the work of Marc Auge and Roland Barthes, as well as some autobiographical material. The second part details MOCA's history, relates that history to the evolution of museums, examines the museum's public relations materials, and tries to understand how to re-imagine the museum in light of work by Miwon Kwon and Rosalyn Deutsche. Interdisciplinary approaches to public space and private institutions are discussed at length in order to open new critical possibilities. There are twenty-nine images.
