Thesis (M.S.)--Southern Connecticut State University, 2005.

My thesis, Women's Lives: Memoir Writing and the Emerging Self, will compare two distinct memoirs, Annie Dillard's An American Childhood and Jill Ker Conway's The Road from Coorain. The methodology section will explain the experience of arriving at this topic and these particular texts, what my project will specifically examine, and what I will add to the arena of voices regarding memoir. The introduction will include a definition of memoir, changing interpretations of the genre, and the significance of women's voices in autobiography. My contribution to the subject matter consists of a three-pronged approach. First, I will investigate the concept of truth and how this idea affects nonfiction storytelling. Next, I will consider the manifestation of narrative structure in these memoirs. Finally, I will probe the relationship between the narrative "inner voice" and the exterior creation of self. I will conclude with a brief summary, reflections, and observations about memoir writing.
