Northrop Frye, an important figure in the development of archetypal criticism, applied this approach to the Bible in his 1982 book The Great Code: The Bible and Literature. This study looks at two of the themes Frye develops in The Great Code: narrative typology and apocalyptic imagery. It examines how critics have reacted to these two themes and generally defends Frye against the critics. In defending Frye, the study compares Frye's thinking with two early church fathers, Justin and Augustine, who pioneered in the development of typological thinking. This study also compares Frye with more recent biblical scholars, particularly in the area of biblical imagery. In all, this study defends Frye's concept of the Bible as a unified work of literature.
