I investigate the Andalusian ritual drama created by the Spanish playwright and director Alfonso Jimenez Romero (1931--1995). This kind of drama is characterized by the incorporation of anthropological manifestations present in Southern Spain, in particular flamenco, but also religious pagan Andalusian rites, and is based on a kind of aesthetics built on the refusal of technical experimentation and media incorporation in art. In this sense, I link Jimenez Romero's concept of ritual with Jercy Grotowski's poor theater and Eugenio Barba's anthropological theater. I further establish the strong connections that exist between Andalusian ritual drama and the anthropological nativity play Morte e Vida Severina by the Brazilian poet Joao Cabral de Melo Neto, which Jimenez Romero himself considers his only crucial influence in developing his ritual drama. I show that Jimenez Romero's ritual drama draws heavily on the nativity play in adopting the same concept of popular lyrics, the same topics, and the same sacred images present in the Brazilian text. Based on the connections I establish, I propose that these authors constitute a dramatic trend, which is rooted in the cultural project Nietzsche developed in his Birth of Tragedy.

I also propose that the influence of the Brazilian play allows Jimenez Romero to break with Lorca's legacy in the former's proposal for a new regionalist cultural project. I examine this new project as part of the intellectual debate on the role of popular culture within the political changes sparked by the student revolts in Spain during the decade of the 60's. Within this ideological framework, I analyze the regionalist political conception of Andalusian ritual drama as an expose of the Marxist concept of cultural revolution created in the 1960s. I conclude that it conceives of the sacred as a way to break up the Marxist alliance established between politics and popular culture in Spain. In short, I propose that Jimenez Romero's ritual drama articulates an Anti-Lorquian and anti-"casticista" new revolutionary view of Andalusia.
