The press of Taiwan has experienced fast-paced changes as a result of the Republic of China government's lifting of the 37-year press ban in 1988. Furthermore, the coverage of China in Taiwan's press, once a predictable anti-Communist ideological product for decades, was marked by twists and turns. Mainland Chinese news has been full of contradictory developments as well.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The press of Taiwan has experienced fast-paced changes as a result of the Republic of China government's lifting of the 37-year press ban in 1988. Furthermore, the coverage of China in Taiwan's press, once a predictable anti-Communist ideological product for decades, was marked by twists and turns. Mainland Chinese news has been full of contradictory developments as well.

This study focuses on the interplay among socio-political structures, the news media and news content in the context of Taiwan's democratization bid. Specifically, the following two broad research questions are raised: (1) How do a range of changing political, market and social factors in the external environment influence the ideological repositioning and strategic planning of Taiwan's newspapers? (2) How do press ideology and other newly-emerged organizational factors of the newspapers affect the news selected about China? Methodologically, three distinct research methods are used for data collection and subsequent analysis: (1) documentary analysis, (2) in-depth interviews, and (3) content analysis.

This study found that the redrawing of the political landscape in Taiwan was paralleled by an ideological realignment in the press. The official Central Daily News and Youth Daily News, following the status-quo line of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT) mainstream faction, took a step back from their traditional Great China-oriented ideology. The dominant United Daily News and China Times remain ideologically committed to Taiwan's ultimate reunification with China. The Taiwanese-owned Independence Evening Post and Liberty Times have a strong ideological commitment to the independence of Taiwan.

Four extra-media factors were discovered to have particular influence upon a newspaper organization's ideological realignment and strategic repositioning in the post-press ban era: strength of control from political parties it supports, who owns it, influence of social interest groups, and where it is published. In turn, three organizational factors were found to predict much of the variance in mainland Chinese news: political ideology, organizational interest, and structural differentiation. Results of content analysis of the six major newspapers indicate that increasing diversity characterized the coverage of China over the 1983-1993 study period in response to changes in the larger society and in media organizations.
