The case method, pioneered by the Harvard Business School (HBS), is a widely used approach to management education, which seeks to establish a direct link between theory and practice. The cornerstone of the case method is the teaching case, an attempt to describe an actual business situation and capture the complexity of organizational life. The Harvard Business School is the world's largest supplier of business teaching cases, distributing more than two million cases each year to schools and businesses.

Despite its objective to represent real world business dilemmas, HBS teaching cases have been criticized as too narrow and superficial to impart complex management ideas. Specifically, cases have been observed as over-emphasizing the formal and rational and failing to include the less obvious, non-rational aspects of contemporary organizations. Based on these concerns, the Harvard Business school announced a major restructuring of their MBA program in 1986, including a commitment to broaden the content of teaching cases.

This study analyzed the content of the 36 Harvard Business teaching cases which were most frequently used during the spring of 1996. The analysis used an adaptation of Bolman and Deal's model of framing organizations (consisting of four organizational arenas including: rational, human, political and symbolic). Thus, the text, teaching notes and attachments for each case were carefully coded into one, or a combination of, the four arenas. This study represents the first known systematic exploration of the structure and content of Harvard Business School teaching cases.

Despite HBS intentions to broaden teaching case content, this qualitative study reveals an increase in the proportion of rational material included in cases written or revised after the 1986 announcement. In addition, the rational material in the cases reflects much richer detail than text describing human issues, and there was little text describing symbolic or political issues. The study includes suggested recommendations for improved case writing and teaching, including the use of the adapted Bolman and Deal model as a tool for case writers, teachers and students.
