Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kent State University, 1998.
Franchising accounts for a significant portion of the US service industry, and has evolved as a strategic component of the internationalization of the US service sector (Fladmoe-Lindquist and Jacque 1995). Despite the growing importance of international franchising, the literature on this subject has been scant (Ackerman et al. 1994). The purpose of the dissertation is twofold. First, it identifies the internal characteristics of the franchising firm associated with its decision to internationalize. And secondly, it determines the direction of that association. This study explains the internationalization of US international franchising using resource-based and agency theories. It tests the model via pooled time-series logistical regression for three industries: retailing, hotels and motels, and professional business services.

This study is path breaking in several ways. First, it develops a theoretical model of international franchising which includes two powerful theories of domestic franchising. Secondly, it tests this model empirically improving on the methodological problems of past research. Thirdly, it shows whether resource-based theory provides a compelling explanation for international franchising. Finally, it investigates three industries separately allowing for cross industrial comparisons.

The results of this study reveal that both the resources of the franchising firm and its ability to monitor and control its foreign affiliates influence its decision to internationalize, supporting the hypotheses put forth in the study. The results also show that the internationalization of US franchising should be studied on an industry by industry basis. This study should be helpful to both academics and practitioners in understanding the globalization of franchising in the service sector.
