Wives of sexual addicts experience a variety of distressing symptoms in response to the revelation of previously hidden and secret sexual behaviors on the part of their husbands. This period of revelation, or disclosure , typically precipitates a state of crisis for the marriage and is for many wives a significant traumatic life event. This study quantified the distress of these women through measurement of trauma-related symptoms, information on past traumatic event exposure, and through the collection of data on factors related to the disclosure period itself. Additionally, the study determined relationships between trauma symptom severity and factors related to the disclosure process. The data suggested that a majority of women married to sexual addicts respond to disclosure with significant traumatic-related distress. However, the data revealed no significant effects for type of disclosure upon total symptom severity or subscales scores. The data did reveal that a combination of years married at the time of disclosure and number of previous traumatic event exposures best predicted total trauma symptom severity scores among wives of sexual addicts. The study concludes with a discussion of the benefits of using a trauma model to understand and treat wives of sexual addicts following disclosure.
