The purpose of this study was to describe the perceptions of Late Baby Boomers changing careers, how they developed their initial career, the reasons they are changing careers, how they are initiating career change, what they are doing differently for their new career than they did their first, and also their perceptions on retirement. Interviews were conducted with 25 Baby Boomers born between 1955 and 1964. Data gathered were analyzed using the constant comparative method of analysis. Participants in this study live and work in the Tulsa, Oklahoma metropolitan area. Late Baby Boomers in this study feel that their initial career development was inadequate to prepare them for their first career. At mid-life each participant initiated career change and used formal learning as a means to achieve their goals. Most of the participants felt the learning experience while learning for a new career was positive, and most of the adults employed self-directed learning to enhance their preparation. The Late Baby Boomers in this study were looking for real world experience to prepare for a new career, and felt that is what was missing from their initial learning experience for career preparation. The participants of this study embarked on one of three career paths: a New Discovery Career, an Old Dreams Career, or a Consolation Career.
