Thesis (M.A.Sc.)--University of Toronto (Canada), 1994.
This thesis investigates the advantages of using the wavelet transform (WT) to analyze otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and speech signals. In particular we test the hypothesis that the WT is a suitable method for extracting the most important features of OAEs. First, we investigate the WT and its properties. We compare it with some other popular signal processing tools such as the Windowed Fourier Transform (WFT) and the Wigner Distribution (WD), in terms of time and frequency resolution, transient detection and robustness to noise. We then choose an algorithm to implement the WT and modify it in a manner that best suits our application. The modified algorithm is implemented in a graphical programming environment provided by LabVIEW (TM, National Instruments, Inc.). Some standard signals, including speech, are used to show the reliability of the algorithm. Finally, some samples of OAEs are recorded and then analyzed with the WT in an attempt to extract and display the information in the signals. For the applications considered, the WT is found to provide a superior representation compared to the other methods tested. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
