Until the latter part of the 20th century, the needs, desires and concerns of the gay community have largely been a non-issue for the two major American political parties---the Democrats and the Republicans. Though Democrats have included gays and lesbians in many Democratic Party Platforms in the past, they have mostly chosen not to speak to them as an individual audience, while the Republicans have mainly ignored them altogether.

520 $a While the Democrats have been seeking support from the gay community for several years, the 2004 U.S. presidential election forced the Democratic Party and its candidates to take a supportive stance on the issue of same-sex marriage or risk losing the GLBT voting block. By utilizing communications strategies and tactics, Democrats were largely successful in both maintaining the loyalty of the GLBT community and gaining votes within the community, but some improvements should be made for the next presidential election.
