Low student retention of ABC University was the problem, and its advising program was the subject of this doctoral research. The main research question was what are the dominant components of an advising program that will increase student retention in the university? Identifying and exploring the dominant components as the setting and policies of the program was the main focus of this research.

520 $a A case study analysis was used to study the various settings and procedures of an advising program. The research was conducted through surveys and interviews of a focus group. This group consists of 10 campus deans from one of the university's three regions. The participants were asked to define the strategic management processes and basic characteristics of the program.
520 $a The findings indicated that the program should be designed and conducted in a collaborative form. Students and advisors should be informed and trained in their roles. The university must provide sufficient resources and recognition of the program. Planning, implementing, and controlling stages should be prescribed and followed. Finally, specific settings and policies described as the basic characteristics should be identified and then followed. These characteristics include the what, who, where, when, why, and how of an advising program for the university. The findings offered an approach to the design and management of a successful advising program that increase student retention for the university. The study and understanding of these dominant components should lead to an improved approach in meeting the interests of the students.
