This study investigated the role of body movement in interpreting abstract vector and free body diagrams. An experimental study was performed in which subjects were randomly assigned to one of three treatment groups. The three treatment groups varied in how much and in what ways their body motion could affect their point of view of virtual diagrams displayed on a rear projection, stereoscopic virtual reality display. Each subject was shown two different stimuli, and then took a quiz regarding the display. One treatment group was not able to alter their perspective of the stereoscopic image, the second treatment group was allowed to control their visual point of view by manipulating a hand held joystick controller to simulate head tracking. The third treatment group could alter their visual perspective of the virtual objects by moving about in physically natural ways.

520 $a The data that were collected included each subject's score on a quiz for each of the stimuli they were able to interact with, the location streams that recorded their position with respect to the virtual objects, the researchers personal observations, comments made by the participants, and in random cases, a dialog with the researcher.
520 $a The data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance, and other statistical methods. An item analysis was performed in order to validate the quizzes, and to compare the treatment groups on specific questions. The tracking data streams were plotted and analyzed visually to find any patterns in movement, and if those movements were correlated to performance on the quizzes. Other correlations were tested, and the tracker streams were also analyzed statistically to find various quantitative aspects of the motions of the subject such as how far and how actively the participant actually moved, and their motions in specific directions.
520 $a The results were that it was important to provide a mechanism for determining the subjects' visual perspective of the stimuli, but under the test conditions it was not compelling that head tracking was significantly more effective than simulated head tracking.
