The current study used Blake and Mouton's Leadership Grid model to determine Sam Houston's Leadership Grid style based on the frequency of concern for people and concern for production meaning units. A computer-aided content analysis was performed using a total of 224 letters and 26 speeches spanning a time frame of 1823 to 1862. Analyses were conducted using chi-square tests and three-way analyses of variance (ANOVA). Results of these analyses indicated a significant difference (p < .05) in the concern for people and concern for production meaning units as a result of subject matter, decade, and type of communication. Results imply that Houston was high on the authority grid style when the subject matter was military or Indian related and high on the country club grid style for public subject matters. The results also indicate that Houston was high on country club grid style in the early decades analyzed and high on authority grid style in the later decades. Lastly, results indicate Houston favored the country club grid style when writing letters.
