This dissertation presents four essays describing structure and structural changes in China's economy with special attention to both at national level and regional level and their interactions. The first essay examines the structural change at national level by evaluating the different industrial development strategies implemented in different periods. The analysis showed that the main difference was that in the post-reform period, the strategy took into account the comparative advantage of the country, thus laying the base for a longer-lasting growth period for the economy led by the manufacturing industry. The analysis visualized the structural changes between different time periods, enhancing the findings of how development strategy changes reflected key-sector changes and related inter-sector relationships. These findings not only confirm the earlier observations of the changes in development strategy in China, but also provided detailed information about the transformation of synergetic interactions among sectors in the country.

The second essay provides some different perspectives to help answer the questions about what the source of economic growth in China is. Using the framework of structural decomposition analysis (SDA), the sources of output growth were classified under three categories---demand, technology, synergetic effects of demand and technology. The main finding is that the output growth in China was led by demand, especially household consumption. This confirms the earlier findings of output growth analysis in China. Further, the analysis shows that the source of sectoral growth is from the demand for the output of the sector itself, which indicates the low degree of interconnections among sectors in China.

The third essay explored regional production structure changes by focusing on inter-regional economic inter-relations. It started from the point of detecting which region was more important to national economic development using the framework of inter-regional input-output analysis. The uneven production structure between the east and the west was revealed, with the east part of the country accumulating a much larger share of the economic activities of the whole country. On the other hand, the degree of inter-regional trade has been decreasing from 1987 to 1997, further perpetuating a regional autarchic protectionist situation in China as it is mentioned in the literature.

The previous three essays suggest some important linkages between nation and regional economic development; the fourth essay attempts to explore these aspects in a more formal way by examining the path of regional income inequality in China. The fourth essay employed a non-parametric method to examine spatial effects modeling the regional income disparity pattern in China. The main findings are that with the enlarging regional income disparity between the core region (coast) and the periphery region (west), China's regional income distribution has moved from convergence to stratification and from the stratification to polarization. The trend of "high income regions remaining high" and "low income regions remaining low" will result in a long-lasting regional disparity between the core and the periphery regions.
