Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Santa Barbara, 2004.
This dissertation examines the themes of monsters, machines, and madness in plays that Alfonso Sastre wrote over two decades (1982--2002). In the six chapters that comprise this study, ten plays are at the core. The theories of Hutcheon, Hayles, Kracauer, Lyotard, Jameson, Todorov, Foucault, and Freud among others are applied to understanding the themes central to the plays. The dramatic and theoretical contributions of Artaud, Brecht, Pirandello, Piscator, and Weiss and their way of influencing the content of Sastre's plays are also mentioned.

Chapter one traces a historical, theoretical, and dramatic approach to understanding Sastre's recent dramas. Here I offer a general background of how the world stage, in particular the modernist theatre of revolt, continues to influence Sastre's dramatic production. I also show how Sastre weaves aspects of the fantastic and postmodern elements into his recent plays to challenge the status quo in a way that his earlier drama had not experienced. Chapter two covers the theme of torture by monsters in two plays (Jenofa Juncal and Revelaciones inesperadas sobre Moises) as well as the postgothic and expressionist literary models that ground the action. Chapter three looks at the triumph of machines in two plays ( Los hombres y sus sombras and Demasiado tarde para Filoctetes ) as well as the underlying critique of the sinister political and law enforcement systems that purportedly serve to protect the community. Chapter four explores the torment of madness in three plays (El viaje infinito de Sancho Panza, Los ultimos dias de Emmanuel Kant) and the mental demons that take hold of their derisive antiheroes. Chapter five views Sastre's most recent literary production, with particular emphasis lying on two plays on torture and a detective trilogy that explores the dialectic of reality/fantasy within the maddening and corrupt world that the characters occupy. Lastly, chapter six explores some of the most recent literary criticism on Sastre, and evaluates how that criticism may or may not affect the future reception of his dramas.
