This study explores the reading of the dramatic text. Starting with the premise that all performances are interpretations of readings, the reading of the dramatic text is its first concretization on the way to production. In some cases it is its only concretization. Sharing the claims of all readings to simultaneously decode the text's linguistic markings and interpret its meaning, the reading of the dramatic text uniquely demands a staged internalized production. A performative act of a special kind, the reading of the dramatic text relies on an a priori concept of theater.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Applying Wolfgang Iser's concept of the reading process and Hans-Georg Gadamer's understanding of "play," as the engagement between an artistic creation and its reader/viewer, I set out to uncover the special interactive process between reader and dramatic text. I viewed my findings within the historical context of dramatic history, using Peter Szondi's developmental theory of modern drama and Hans Robert Jauss's concept of the horizon of expectation. My organizational plan is based on Mario Valdes's method of inquiry. Approaching each text in terms of what it says, how it speaks, what it speaks about, and how I read the text, I established a format consistent with each analysis.

The initial focus of the discussions on Six Characters, Henry IV, Yerma, and The House of Bernarda Alba is their formal properties, specifically structure, characters, and language. I discuss their historicity in relation to historical composition, dramatic historical context, and dramatic history. The analysis explores the challenges each of these dramas present for the reader: integrating main and side texts, internalizing performance, and conceptualizing sound.
