Thesis (M.A.)--The University of Texas at Arlington, 2005.
This article hypothesizes that the move from an agriculture-dominated society to a service-dominated society can influence the composition of sex ratios that will, in turn, influence fertility rates. Two hypotheses are developed and tested using data from 20 regions and 103 provinces in Italy. The findings suggest that provinces with high levels of service employment will have low sex ratios (an oversupply of women), which are then associated with lower fertility rates. Differences between rural and non-rural provinces are also explored.
