This researcher showed that the variables of the health belief model significantly predicted current adherence to the multiple CRC-screening guidelines presently endorsed by the American Cancer Society as well as current adherence to colonoscopic screening in 435 women who were undergoing routine mammography. Perceived risk of CRC, perceived barriers to undergoing CRC screening, and self-efficacy about undergoing CRC screening were significant predictors when the model was used to predict current adherence to the CRC-screening guidelines. Self-efficacy about undergoing colonoscopic screening was a significant predictor when the model was used to predict current colonoscopic-screening adherence. Self-efficacy was found to substantially increase the predictive effectiveness of the model. The model remained significant when other variables in the study were controlled.
