Thesis (M.Sc.(Eng))--Queen's University at Kingston (Canada), 2004.
Geotechnical modelling and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is being increasingly applied to problems of slope stability. This project, an in-depth analysis of the slow moving rock slope known as Downie Slide, located near Revelstoke, BC, provides insight into how these technologies can provide insight into past and present movement trends, as well as landslide movement mechanisms.

Work for this project has had several inter-related components including: the incorporation of geotechnical data into a GIS database customized for geotechnical data presentation and visualization, and the acquisition of results from simulations conducted using calibrated numerical models to assess factors influencing landslide movement processes. Data from various geotechnical instruments have been integrated into the GIS platform, along with information about the geometry and geology of the site. Numerical models have been calibrated to observed characteristics of the slide, taking into account geological controls and processes, and have been used to understand the sensitivity of the slope stability to variable material properties and changing water table levels.

The work presented is intended to be used within a multi-partner research initiative into decision support, known as the GIST network, and to aid in routine, ongoing inspections of Downie Slide undertaken by BC Hydro.
