Thesis (Ph.D.)--Duke University, 2004.
Three parts are included in this dissertation: Chapter 1 is the fundamental introduction of the concepts and techniques used in the research; Chapter 2 is the description of the development of a coupled dynamic mechanical analysis-dynamic infrared linear dichroism (DMA-DIRLD) method with continuous variable scanning ability, and the investigation of films of Estane RTM 5703, a random di-block copolymer, both pure and plasticized, by use of this new method; and Chapter 3 is a detailed study of the thermal and mechanical properties of NafionRTM, a polymeric ionomer, using DMA, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and time-dependent FTIR as unction of water content, with the aim of investigating the morphological evolution in the material.

The new DMA-DIRLD approach and its results provide the capability to collect dynamic mechanical and spectral responses simultaneously and continuously in both temperature and frequency domains. This is the first report using simultaneous DMA-DIRLD under continuously variable scanning. This technique is an important step forward, which provides substantial experimental evidence for the mechanical/spectral correlation (with the assistance of multivariate curve resolution-alternating least-squares) and for the confirmation of reorientation theory. The temperature-dependent (TD) DMA-DIRLD data show a strong and consistent correlation between the macroscopic rheological properties and the microscopic (molecular, inter-molecular and sub-molecular) responses of Estane RTM, and reveal that the function of the plasticizes in Estane RTM is more structural than dynamic. The frequency-dependent (FD) DMA-DIRLD data show distinctively different time-temperature superposition in DMA and DIRLD measurements than do the TD data. The twisting functional groups play key roles in the mechanical property change with frequency. The frequency domain data can also be used to study important mechanical processes such as sample resonance. In both the TD and FD data, the signs of the parallel and perpendicular polarized spectra in the C=O stretching region can only be explained in terms of a model that presumes more than one population of C=O groups and more than one C=O reorientation responses.

The study of morphological evolution and the unique thermal and mechanical behavior of NafionRTM with time-dependent DMA-FTIR and TGA-FTIR shows that size-change of the water clusters plays a crucial role, causing the strengthened modulus under small stress and the apparent significantly faster water loss shown by IR spectroscopy than by TGA. These results show clearly that IR intensity can not be used as a reliable measure of water content in low water level NafionRTM.
