This thesis is an investigation of the idea of travel and travel writing, focusing on the life and work of Yang Shen (1488-1559), a scholar and poet exiled to Yunnan in 1524. Travel was a key aspect of Yang's scholarship and influenced both the form in which he wrote and the approach he took to questions. In this way, he extended the range of traditional Chinese scholarship and creative writing.
