This study explores antifascist education and commemoration in East German youth education and formal extracurricular activities in the period 1961--1989. As the East German regime sought to establish both an East German sense of national identity and a socialist historical consciousness, two of the most potent historical narratives to permeate youth education became the stories of communist resistors who fought National Socialism and the heroic deeds of the victorious Red army in World War II. This official history of the struggle against fascism found support at various sites central to young people's comprehensive educational experience in the GDR. This project extends scholarship on political education and propaganda beyond the level of the state to consider the everyday workings of the institutions and state employees responsible for conveying stories and commemorative practices to a generation born after the defeat of fascism. The study also assesses how students viewed antifascist education and commemoration, with reactions ranging from enthusiasm to indifference and dissent. The author concludes that while there were some enthusiastic students of antifascism involved in Young Historians Clubs ( AG Junge Historiker) and other history projects, teachers and youth group leaders increasingly fought a losing battle against the formalization of antifascist commemoration. By examining the gulf between compliance and enthusiastic support for antifascism, scholars can better understand both the longevity and underlying weaknesses of a comprehensive educational system and political culture that survived for four decades and then collapsed within months of the fall of the Berlin wall.

The research for this dissertation draws on a variety of sources including administrative documents as well as textbooks, curriculum manuals, magazines for educators and youth, audiovisual materials and student letters and essays. The author also conducted thirty-seven oral history interviews with former East German educators and students. By exploring student reception and the role of educators as memory intermediaries, this study provides a fresh theoretical and methodological approach to a number of interrelated research fields such as national identity formation, the politicization of memory, national school curriculum, youth protest in communist nations, right-wing extremism and the historic division of East and West Germany.
