The dissertation examines the ways in which Polish elementary school textbooks from the interwar period approached the task of nation-building in the context of the new Polish state that emerged as a result of World War I. The study focusses on history, geography, civics, and reading textbooks for the elementary schools. In particular, it examines how the books served to create and/or strengthen Polish national consciousness among young people, paying particular attention to the popular children's poems and history legends that formed part of the shared Polish consciousness.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study also looks at civic education in the schoolbooks, focussing on the problem of the crisis of parliamentary democracy in the interwar period. Interwar Polish civic education fell into two distinct periods: the first decade after the war when parliamentary institutions dominated government, and the period that followed an extensive reform of the curricula and textbooks under the direction of Joseph Pilsudski's Sanacja regime. A comparison of the civic education of these two periods provides insight into the nature of Sanacja and the problems of adjusting to parliamentary democracy in Poland.
