As a consequence of age-related changes in circadian rhythms, persons with advanced age are vulnerable to dim lighting and sleep-disturbing environments that may cause increased nocturnal urine volumes (UV). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of continuous dim light (LL), continuous dim light with sleep deprivation (LLSD), and 24-hour days of light and dark periods (LD) on intraperitoneal body temperature (IBT), rest/activity (R/A), and UV rhythms, in rats of four different age groups (Young rats aged 6 months, Middle-aged rats aged 12 months, Old rats aged 16 months, and Old-old rats aged 20 or more months). Data indicated that in the Old rat age group LLSD shifted the UV rhythm into the rest phase (p < .05). The older rats demonstrated a greater increase in UV during their rest phase with phase delay of IBT and UV rhythms, compared to no change in Middle-aged rats' UV rhythm during LLSD. In addition, the Old rats' R/A amplitude diminished during LLSD, as did the robustness of Old rat IBT during LLSD. Diminished IBT rhythm robustness, which provides an estimate of central pacemaker regulatory function, suggested that the effects of sleep deprivation in dim light on the Old rat UV rhythm were due to age-related decline in central pacemaker function. Nurses can use these findings to develop interventions to support UV rhythm regulation in future biological research for humans. Supported by a NASA Nebraska EPSCoR Seed Grant.
