Thesis (M.A.)--San Francisco State University, 2005.
This thesis brings to light the absent-presence grid, the next generation of grid in use in design, cinema, and artistic expression, and demonstrated in the work of artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (which reveals repeated use of the absent-presence grid in his interactive projects). This discovery is arrived at by first exploring the historical definitions of art and design and how these fail to keep up with modern usage. Tracing historical contexts of projected imagery, art, and design led to the decision to redefine the terms. Professionals (including faculty at San Francisco State University) in design, art, cinema, museum studies and anthropology were surveyed; sufficient acceptance helped finalize new definitions of art, the arts, genres of art, design, and design process. 5(Trans) Age's characteristics---transpositional, transtemporal, transcendental, transcultural, and transglobal---and the genres of art (coined in this development)---viewart, formart, textart, illumart, performart, communart, infoart, and mindart---helped in the evaluation of Lozano-Hemmer's projects, leading, finally, to the discovery of the absent-presence grid---a demonstration of the transpositional in the 5 (Trans) Age. Even though the usage of the absent-presence grid is currently found in an already wide variety of circumstances---hyperlinked Website windows, streaming media online, live video phone TV broadcasts, interactive video and/or cinema being just a few examples---this is the first identification if its usage and existence. However, it will require future work to explore more fully the implications and applications.
