Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University, 2005.
The contemporary art of violin playing, in music written and performed since the mid-twentieth century, has seen a stunning development of new techniques, new approaches to performance, and new technologies. Traditional pedagogical methods inherited primarily from the American, Franco-Belgian, and Russian violin schools, while they remain the foundation for the training of violinists in our conservatories and universities, are not by themselves sufficient for the training of the violinist of the twenty-first century. These traditional methods must be supplemented with contemporary, innovative pedagogical approaches to performance and training, for the mastery of contemporary violin repertoire.

This study culminates with the composition of supplemental materials crafted for the purpose of training the contemporary professional violinist. These materials include etudes and caprices designed expressly for the exploration and mastery of extended techniques on the violin, to prepare the professional violinist for the comprehension of passages including such devices as harmonics, scordatura, unusual multiple stops, mixed meter, octave displacement, polyrhythm, microtones, and rapid changes of timbre. These materials, in the form of etudes and caprices, are presented in the fourth chapter.

The focus of the body of this work is on extended performance techniques of the twenty-first century violinist, including representative examples from the solo violin repertoire by various major composers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The second chapter includes an in-depth analysis of some aspects of contemporary technique, including harmonics, scordatura, microtones, works for solo violin and tape, and some technological aspects of contemporary performance. The chapter on rhythm explores such topics as polyrhythm and unusual rhythmic subdivisions, and attempts to give an overview of the rhythmic techniques inherent in and absolutely necessary for accurate interpretation by the contemporary performer.

The violinist trained for a professional career in the twenty-first century must not only have constant exposure to extended techniques, but must be adaptable to any new form of technological equipment which may alter or enhance the performance on the stage or in the recording studio. This study also explores how the introduction of new technologies has impacted the contemporary performance practice of the professional violinist in the twenty-first century.
