Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stanford University, 2005.
This dissertation contains three different chapters. In the first chapter I study the work and retirement behavior of older men and women, aged 65 to 69 years, in the US. The main goal is to understand how the presence of the social security earnings test influences this decision. Because we observe older men and women before and after the elimination of the earnings test in the US in 2000, we can determine whether the presence of the earnings test alters the participation decision.

Using the Health and Retirement Survey (HRS) 1994--2002, wee find that there is a weak association between the wage the individual faces and his choice of haw much to work. Moreover, the elimination of the earnings test in the US did not alter significantly the labor force participation decision of older men and women.

In the second chapter I propose a test for the presence of wealth effects in labor supply. The test is implemented using the Panel Study of Income Dynamics 1967--1993. Consistent with the theory we find strong wealth effect, caused by current unanticipated wage changes. While new information about future wage changes has an effect contrary to the prediction of the theory. We explore several explanation for this last finding.

The third chapter explores the association between the minimum wage and teenage employment. We find that previous results regarding the effect on teenage employment of statutory minimum wage laws using monthly data from the outgoing rotation groups of the Current Population Survey overstate the effect. This happens because the nominal variables are not deflated when year dummies are removed from the specification. We show that deflating the nominal variables by the finish goods produce price index reduces previous estimates substantially. Furthermore we find that an increase in the minimum wage has a bigger impact on girls' employment than on boys' employment.
