Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897--1957) is perhaps best known today as both an opera composer and a film composer for Warner Brothers studios in Hollywood in the 1930's and 40's. Although studies have appeared in recent years on Korngold's three piano sonatas, songs, operas and film scores, relatively little attention has been concentrated on his highly individual contributions to the chamber music genre. I have therefore focused on four major works of Korngold's piano and string chamber music: the Piano Trio in D Major, Op. 1, the Sonata in G Major for Violin and Piano, Op. 6, the Piano Quintet in E Major, Op. 15, and the Suite for 2 Violins, Cello and Piano Left Hand, Op. 23.

I offer a detailed analysis of these four works, and I consider how they exemplify certain aspects of Korngold's individual style. Korngold composed all of these works during his Viennese period (i.e. pre-Hollywood), and they display an astonishing musical imagination as well as a sure and confident grasp of traditional musical forms. Korngold was one of the most phenomenal prodigies in the history of Western music, and his two earliest works here to be examined, composed respectively at the tender ages of twelve and fifteen, show a maturity that is awe-inspiring.

Finally, I offer suggestions to performers which may be helpful in projecting these difficult yet fascinating pieces to the listener. Korngold's musical style is often complex, and his chamber works were designed with the skills and sensibilities of the most accomplished virtuosi of fin-de-siecle Vienna in mind. Each of these works approaches symphonic proportions, and demands of the performers a very high level of commitment and dedication for a successful and convincing performance. It is my hope that this project will encourage performers to explore, to study and to perform this neglected and deeply rewarding repertoire, thereby bringing this music to the attention of a wider listening public.
