Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Chicago, 2005.
A study of an African-American young man's experiences as he neared the end of his high school career was carried out using a case study approach. This young man was shadowed and interviewed to inquire into this important period of his life. He and the researcher also developed an agreement whereby both their formal and casual social experiences were used to gain insight into his life.

The challenges this young man encountered and described were found to be resultant of personal decision making and personal circumstance but more so related to larger educational and social policies that plague the achievement, success, and ultimate stability of teens found in disenfranchised and low-income schools and neighborhoods.

The author concluded this case study by discussing the implications the work has on notions of teen life, urban educational policy, and broader urban social policy.
