This research study was appropriate in view of the current increased attention on marriage and marriage education, topics which are presently being considered on national agendas (Sollee, 1996). Federal and state government's interest in the continuing decline of marriage has produced an appeal for preventive interventions (Stanley & Markman, 1997). Marriage education programs are specifically designed to address potential trouble spots in relationships before they reach a point of crisis. The mismanagement of marital difficulties can result in continued distress of a couple which can ultimately lead to divorce (Markman et al., 1993). Marriage education programs are designed to intervene with, early and effectively, to alleviate distress and prevent dissolution of the marriage. Marriage education courses have also worked preventatively to help couples improve their relationships before problems develop. These programs assist couples in improving and acquiring skills such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, and communication.

This study focused on a specific marriage education program, the Dynamic Marriage course and its outcome on its participant's reported marital satisfaction levels. A short demographic survey was completed by participants, also. This study consisted of a sample pool of 1200 husbands and wives, which resulted in a final N of 1192 pre-test and 1187 post-test. This sample consisted of longer-married, educated Caucasians. Marital satisfaction levels were measured by the Kansas Marital Satisfaction Scale (KMSS). Findings were that participants in the marriage education course had significantly higher levels of marital satisfaction at completion than they had upon enrollment. The study's findings also indicated that wives enrolled in the course reported higher levels of marital satisfaction on the KMSS than their husbands did on the pre-test. This finding differed from previous studies reported in the literature. Indications from this study suggest that marital satisfaction is a worthy outcome to investigate within the scope of marriage education and possibly has significant implications in assisting educators, course developers, researchers, and government agencies who are involved in assessing program outcomes.
