The purpose of this study was to examine the controversy about male menopause. Many men do not believe that this is a major concern for their gender; however, various research articles have documented the validity of male menopause. Therefore, it is important for authors, healthcare providers, physicians, and the media to educate men about the realities of male menopause. Male menopause is also referred to as male climacteric, viropause, andropause, and andro deficiency. Male menopause and other associated words will be defined to assist the reader in better understanding the technical terminology that is associated with this disorder.

This study examined how society, healthcare workers, and the media viewed male menopause, and it suggested, through research, why men have a hard time accepting that they too will experience menopause as they age. The goal for this research was to report the findings of this study in an effort to help others support men who are experiencing the signs and symptoms of male menopause. The method of obtaining the statistics for this study was the use of an independently designed questionnaire, with 19 questions, adapted from the research literature that focused on men between the ages of 20 to 75 years of age that lived in the Detroit-Metropolitan Area. There were 200 questionnaires distributed, with an expected response rate of 50%. The surveys were conducted from November 30, 2004 through January 8, 2005. An Excel spreadsheet was used to total the responses to each question. Each question had the same degree of weight. A statistical correlation was done by focusing on questions 1 through 6 to discern if men know or do not know about male menopause. Based on 100 percent, a percentage rating was be assigned, and the results were identified in percentages for each question. After all of the statistics were analyzed, this researcher either accepted or rejected one of the research questions.
