Thesis (M.S.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
The purpose of this study was to determine how lower extremity segment orientation prior to touchdown influences mechanical loading of the reaction force during the last two steps of a lateral movement. Female collegiate volleyball players (n=6) performed their preferred blocking footwork. Kinematics (200 frames/second), reaction forces (1200 Hz) and muscle activation patterns (surface EMG, 1200 Hz) of sixteen muscles of the trunk and right leg were collected simultaneously. Between-subject differences in segment orientation relative to the reaction force contributed to significant between-subject differences in knee and hip net joint moments (NJM) during the single leg impact phase. Between subject differences in muscle activation patterns prior to contact indicate that the athletes scaled their muscle activation prior to contact to accommodate for differences in segment orientations. Different segment orientations and total body center of mass (TBCM) trajectories across subjects altered the ground reaction force curves.
