The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) is a multi-billion dollar urban megaproject dedicated to the transformation of Malaysia's national economy into one based on high-technology industries. Yet, the MSC is different from other technopoles like it. State institutions have from the beginning of the project linked familiar goals of economic growth to aspirations for Malaysia to become a 'developed nation' by the year 2020 through the MSC. Consequently, the development aspirations attached to the MSC are as much about new forms of citizenship and nationhood as they are about economic growth and technical systems. The state's goal for the MSC is that it be a catalyst toward creating an ethnically and territorially integrated nation that will be successful in the 'Information Age'. As such, the MSC is much more than a physical space dedicated to specific forms of economic activity. It is a complex spatiality that ties together the politics of technology, development, and identity with processes of nation building that crisscross scales as diverse as individual citizens, the nation, and the globe.
