This study addresses the dynamic factors and phenomena of renewal among the Zomi (Chin) in Myanmar. Christian mission had reached the Zomi (Chin) in Myanmar by the early 1900s. More than half the population professed Christianity by the 1960s. However, nominality was evident among the second- and third-generation Christians. By the 1970s, a spiritual breakthrough and renewal fell on some individuals and a small group of people. This renewal spread not only among the Zomi but also across the country, through the gospel witness of the laos of God.

The present study is primarily historical, but its uses the discipline of anthropology, theology, and church growth, as it examines factors and issues in the movement. The study is based on data collected largely through interviews with people in the area, newsletters, unpublished materials, and personal experiences. Figures, tables, and maps supplement descriptions to depict dynamics of renewal.

The study examines cultural factors of the Zomi and causes of nominality in the churches among the Zomi. It then examines the dynamic factors of renewal---pietistic prayer and bible study, preaching, teaching and mobilization, methods of witness, Christ, new structures for church planting and establishing new training schools, breakthroughs, theological rediscoveries, and recontextualization. It also examines the role and dynamic of lay witnessing.

The study concludes by arguing that renewal is the work of God through His people. When renewal comes, the New Testament pattern of Christianity is rediscovered, the church is revitalized, the gospel is preached, and mission is carried out. The renewal it self supplies a dynamic factor of church growth. Finally, the study recommends further work for church unity and greater mission.
