Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2005.
The parent training program at Venture High School addresses several student needs: (a) low achievement among our students of poverty, (b) student at-risk behavior, and (c) the strength and involvement of our families. Venture High held Love and Logic parent trainings in order to increase positive family communication and involvement in their student's academic lives (Cline & Fay 1990). The 10 at-risk students and their families who participated in the parent training at Venture High School were Title I 9th grade students who were "Below Basic" or "Far-Below Basic" in math and or English language arts proficiencies on the STAR assessments, and who had multiple disciplinary referrals in their first year at Venture High School, and who were identified as qualifying for "free and reduced lunch."

Students of families who successfully completed Venture High School's parent training have higher academic success. Participants reported a large increase in the 40 Developmental Assets, an index of healthy adolescent development (effect size calculated at .86). An analysis of student GPA found a medium gain (effect size calculated at .46). An analysis of the disciplinary referral record for 10 students whose parent(s) went through the Love and Logic training showed mostly favorable results. Fifty percent of the 10 students received no disciplinary referrals after the Parent Training Program. Thirty percent received one referral (attendance, disruption, inappropriate behavior = 3 demerits, defiance and academic dishonesty = 5 demerits) after the parent training program. Twenty percent received multiple referrals despite the parent training program. The rate of referrals per 2-month period decreased for all 10 participants.
