The study was intended to provide information not readily available regarding multicultural adolescent novels. The results were meant to expose educators to twenty-four multicultural adolescent novels which could be used in the classroom as alternatives to novels currently in use. The study provided a review of each novel through annotations which included brief summaries and highlighted adolescent and cultural issues identified.

Data were gathered using rubrics developed by the researcher. The rubrics developed around both the adolescent and cultural issues were largely responsible for the objectivity of this study and guided the analysis of 24 multicultural adolescent novels from the African-American, Asian-American, and Hispanic cultures. The adolescent issues included sexual relationships, parent-adolescent relationships, peer pressure, and self-identification. Cultural issues included racism/discrimination, struggle of living between two cultures, acceptance, and stereotypical beliefs. Each issue was given a score of 0, 1, 2, or 3 using rubrics developed by the researcher. Scores were then compiled into matrices and further analyzed to discuss the extent to which issues appeared and the similarities and dissimilarities among cultures.

Findings indicated that adolescent issues were more visible than cultural issues in multicultural adolescent novels. When analyzing the adolescent issues, Parent-adolescent issues were found to be the most predominant. African-American and Hispanic novels tended to emphasize self-identification issues, while Asian-American novels focused on parent-adolescent relationships. When analyzing cultural issues, stereotypical beliefs were found to not be a key issue in multicultural adolescent literature. African-American novels tended to deal with acceptance, while the Asian-American and Hispanic novels tended to deal with a struggle of living between two cultures.
