As has been addressed in many publications, the usual inversion procedures for SASW testing assume that only one Rayleigh mode is dominant and thus fail to give reliable results in irregular soil profiles where the shear wave velocity of the layers does not increase with depth. Many practical cases such as pavement systems fall into this category.

An algorithm for the inversion of the SASW is presented that is based on the simulation of the SASW test. Simulation of the test includes the effect of all Rayleigh modes so that the algorithm is not limited to regular profiles. Artificial irregular profiles, including a profile with a soft layer trapped between two stiff layers, a profile with a stiff layer sandwiched between two soft layers, and a profile with softer layers at higher depths, as well as a pavement profile with a sharp contrast between shear wave velocity of surface and base layer, have all been successfully inverted.

The construction of the dispersion curve from the experimental data has also been automated and implemented in a program 'AutoSASW' along with the inversion technique. Some of the problems in construction of the dispersion curve such as phase unwrapping have been discussed and proper solutions have been proposed.
