The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the age and gender specific 1-year period prevalence and 2-year incidence rates of depression and obesity, respectively, in the Canadian adult population; and (2) to determine the relationship between obesity and depression with respect to temporality and duration.

520 $a Methods. This study was a secondary analysis of the longitudinal component of the National Population Health Survey. At Cycle 1 in 1994/95, the study cohort consisted of 6,104 Canadians, aged 20--59, who were followed until 2000/01. Prevalence estimates and incidence rates were calculated. Logistic regression was used to determine if individuals who reported obesity were more likely than those who were not obese to develop depression within the six-year follow-up. The association between depression with duration of obesity and severity of obesity was also assessed.
520 $a Conclusions. This was the first study to investigate the longitudinal relationship between obesity and depression in Canada. Obesity and depression have high incidence and prevalence in Canada so public health efforts must be made to decrease these contributors to disease burden in this country.
