Thesis (Ph.D.)--Texas Tech University, 2003.
The purpose of this research was to assess whether there is a psychological profile particular to student actors and to what degree their profiles may differ from that of other types of individuals. To explore this possibility, both student actors and various control groups' profiles were measured using four separate instruments containing eighteen different sub-scales and two instrument totals. Student actors are higher self monitors, more interpersonally perceptive, slightly more neurotic and extroverted, and much more emotionally sensitive and open to experiences than individuals of other avocations. Three cornerstones of these acting profiles are good interpersonal perception, high emotional intensity, and an active imagination. Advanced theatrical training has a significant effect on those immersed within that training. Individuals attracted to acting demonstrate a propensity for high self monitoring. Acting is inexorably linked with the actors' emotions and the display of those emotions. For actors, acting has a foundation in imagination and openness, while for others it is more an exercise in extroversion. These results lend support to the notion that student actors have a different psychological profile than individuals training for other avocations. A suggestion for further areas of research is proposed.
