An Inverse Monte-Carlo (IMC) method is developed to solve the inverse problem of electromagnetic scattering from systems composed of complex aerosols. By complex we mean that the system can be comprised of a broadly dispersed, multi-component aerosol. The IMC method is verified using simulated scattering data from systems composed of dielectric spheres and then validated using actual angular scattering data from suspensions of poly-latex spheres of known size and refractive index. The IMC method is shown to be a stable method for inverting scattering data to determine both size and refractive index distributions of complex aerosols.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The IMC method was also tested for its behavior when random (shot) noise is present in the scattering data. The IMC is shown to be effective in determining the aerosol properties with signal-to-noise ratios down to 3:1. The IMC method is further shown to be a general method for determining any class of problem which can be written as a Fredholm I integral.
