Thesis (Ph.D.)--Princeton University, 1994.
This thesis is a comparative study of the biology and evolution of soldier producing aphids. I first provide a comprehensive review of all published literature on the soldier producing aphids with a synthesis, a new theoretical framework for guiding future studies, and a broad discussion of the future of soldier aphid studies. This review also begins the task of providing a phylogenetic framework for soldier aphid studies. This project is continued in two subsequent chapters that provide a detailed phylogeny for aphids of the family Hormaphididae, particularly the Cerataphidini, constructed on the basis of mtDNA sequence data. These chapters demonstrate that soldiers have originated at least eight separate times and been lost at least once. Therefore, the aphids provide plentiful opportunities for comparative studies of lineages that have independently evolved soldiers.Subjects--Topical Terms:

As an illustration of the types of field studies required for a clearer understanding of soldier aphid biology I present two studies on the soldier-producing species, Cerataphis fransseni. First, I experimentally determined the complete life cycle of this tropical aphid. The life cycles of tropical aphids are relatively poorly known even though tropical aphids may provide crucial keys to understanding the evolution and maintenance of complex life cycles. Finally, I examined soldier investment strategies in relation to colony growth in this aphid. I discovered that the aphids appear to use a geometric rule of soldier investment, scaling the number of soldiers to either the surface area of the gall or the circumference of the colony, and not directly to the number of aphids.
