Though much has been written about Charles Spencer Chaplin and his films questions remain about the nature of his comedy and the identity of his screen character. While historians and critics have acknowledged that Chaplin came to film from a form of variety entertainment known as the English music hall, few studies have discussed that entity or considered Chaplin's relationship to it.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a Using the British trade journal The Era as a source for data, this analysis shows how Chaplin's film comedy was an outgrowth of his work in the English music hall. The dissertation defines the history and makeup of the music hall, describes the relationship Chaplin's family had to the industry, identifies major personalities and comedy genres existing in this form of entertainment, and traces Charles Chaplin's career within it. Detailed descriptions of music hall sketches in which Chaplin performed are published for the first time and their influence on the comedian's motion pictures are identified. The study concludes by showing how the films Chaplin made between 1914-1917 reflect themes relating to immigrants in the America of that time and indicates why Charlie Chaplin's early screen persona was not a "tramp" but a variation of a traditional music hall character known as a "quaint".
