Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 1990.
In three separate experiments house crickets (Acheta domesticus L.), Japanese beetles (Popillia japonic Newman), and eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum (F.)) were fed to broiler chicks in purified and practical diets. Of the three, only the house crickets proved to be a good source of protein for chickens.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In three separate experiments house crickets (Acheta domesticus L.), Japanese beetles (Popillia japonic Newman), and eastern tent caterpillars (Malacosoma americanum (F.)) were fed to broiler chicks in purified and practical diets. Because of the results of the previous 3 experiments, only the house crickets were targeted for mass production. Four diets were fed to house crickets and the diets were compared on the basis of cost and cricket growth. A modified broiler chick starter mash provided adequate growth for a relatively low cost. Crickets were then compared to other livestock used for meat production.

The broiler chick starter mash was fed to crickets in fecundity experiments. Those data were used to generate a production model for house crickets.
