Thesis (Ph.D.)--Arizona State University, 1999.
This thesis considers the life and career of Ji Chaoding between 1927 and 1963 within the larger context of the Chinese political economy. One of the earliest marxist theoreticians in the west, Ji explored the Asiatic mode of production enroute to a doctoral degree in economics at Columbia University. Later he rose to prominence in both the Nationalist and Chinese communist governments. During a career that spanned thirty-six years, Ji achieved distinction as a scholar, teacher, propagandist, banker, diplomat, and foreign trade specialist.

As his Chinese biographers and supporters are now quick to note, Ji Chaoding was among the first communist officials to advocate trade with Western Europe, realizing the importance of Western technology transfers to China's economic reconstruction. At the same time, Ji believed Sino-Western trade could and should be balanced, with a vastly improved marketing effort he would supervise to help to boost China's exports. Ji also openly favored direct foreign investment from the West at a time when few communists were willing to make such a suggestion.

Goals of the dissertation include challenging existing hagiography by presenting a more fully developed picture of Ji and the organizations he worked for. This will be accomplished by using a wide range of English and Chinese-language sources not previously available to scholars. A second goal of the dissertation is to use the individual Ji Chaoding to introduce certain organizations and publications, suggesting both how they shaped A as an individual and especially, how Ji's individuality is reflected in them. The final goal of the dissertation relates to Ji Chaoding's standing within the Chinese Communist Party and how his years working underground in the United States and for the Nationalist government affected his position after 1949. Ji's experience during this period enumerates certain vital continuities in Chinese banking, foreign trade, and commerce between the pre-1949 Nationalist and post-1949 Chinese communist eras.
