Thesis (Ph.D.)--Fielding Graduate Institute, 2005.
The literature on career changes has been concerned with early, rather than midlife or "later life" career decisions. This study uses the grounded theory method to examine two transitions occurring in midlife: exiting a Fortune 500 Company and choosing a new career. The study's sample was a "purposive sample"---a non-random sampling method intended to result in a sample that is relevant, rather than a sample that is representative of a larger population. Data for the study were obtained from the 1--2 hour semi-structured interviews with the 13 participants.

This research builds on existing theories and models and suggests an inductively derived way of conceptually ordering and describing the data, rather than testing the validity of existing transition and career change models. The findings are presented as theoretical propositions: (1) Exiting the corporation is an evolving process; (2) Exiting the corporation does not appear to be precipitated by a single event; (3) The choice to exit the corporation is in response to the loss of belief and respect in management, rather than because of dissatisfaction with the work content; (4) Leaving the corporation to start a new career requires exiting former roles and entering new roles; (5) Choosing a new career at midlife is more than making a career change---it is a significant life-changing transition; (6) One of the key elements of a midlife career transition is self-reflection; (7) Both of these transitions---exiting the corporation and choosing a new career---are not rational, linear processes, but intuitive, non-linear processes that are influenced by unplanned events.
