The purpose of this study was to ascertain whether (and the degree to which) formal and informal entry plans have an influence on the first 90 days of the new school superintendent position. Nine areas were examined that related to the first 90: preparation for entry, entry plan creation, leader puts the organization before self, securing early wins, creation of a common vision/culture, effectiveness in change management, employ the correct personnel/transition team, strategic long-term planning, and ethics in leadership.

520 $a A 10-member cohort of University of Southern California doctoral students shared the results of one-on-one interviews conducted with 20 current California superintendents. A total of 772 current superintendents in California were sent an electronic survey via email from the Association of California School Administrators; 243 superintendents completed the survey.
520 $a Three primary research questions were the focus of interview questions and electronic survey. Sixty-three percent of the respondents to the survey said that the entry period is essential for a successful superintendency; 76% reported having an entry strategy but only 32% said that it was written; 57% responded that board/superintendent relations were the most important area of focus in their entry period.
520 $a The study concludes that, while the entry period is recognized as an essential factor in a superintendent's success, superintendents typically had limited training or professional preparation for the entry period. Most respondents relied on professional experience accumulated prior to their first superintendency.
